Why Do Bugs Come Inside When It Gets Cold?

There are several reasons it’s more common to find pest infestations in your Memphis home during the winter. Much like larger animals, many types of insects thrive in warm and humid temperatures. Additionally, food is less readily available in the winter.

Try these indoor pest control tips for Memphis winters to keep insects out of your home when it gets cold.

Seal Access Points

Access is a common concern when it comes to pest control at any time of the year. Many insects are small enough to squeeze through tiny cracks and crevices around doors and windows. If you can feel a cold draft near these entry points, there’s probably a space large enough for an insect to enter your home.

In addition to sealing unintentional gaps in your home, look for deliberate access points. Place fine screens or metal mesh over vents. If you have pets, it can help to install an airtight doggy door. Placing a motion-activated light over the door can also keep pests away from this access point.

Keep Food Packaged

In addition to seeking a warm place to last through the winter, insects will also access your home in search of food. The scent of food that’s poorly packaged can travel far enough to attract pests from outside your home.

One of the most effective indoor pest control tips for Memphis winters is to keep food containers properly sealed. When you buy food that comes in bags, such as sugar or cereal, transfer those foods to sealable plastic containers. Keep a lid on trash receptacles, and take food scraps outside immediately.

Look for Stowaways

It’s also important to think about other ways pests get into your home. Insects will hide or nest in certain products that you might buy this time of the year. For example, watch out for ants and termites on any wood you buy for your fireplace.

Inspect clothing and textiles for bed bugs. Keep an eye out for fleas or ticks on pets that spend time outdoors. Insects will infest anything that can supply them with warmth or nourishment, so inspect any products made from natural materials before bringing them into your home.
