Mosquitos

What are mosquitos?

Mosquitoes are fly-like insects. Adults have narrow, oval-shaped bodies and long, distinctive legs that hang down when in flight. Mosquitoes have one pair of wings covered in fine hairs, and extended mouthparts (proboscises) that they use for feeding. Both males and females feed on plant nectar as their primary source of food, but the females also feed on the blood of humans and animals to get the protein necessary to produce viable eggs. Under ideal weather conditions, some mosquitoes can develop from egg to adult in less than a week. These outdoor pests are prolific breeders and difficult to control without the help of a professional.

Are mosquitoes dangerous?

While not every mosquito spreads disease, mosquitoes – as a whole – are vectors of disease and pathogens like the West Nile virus that will make people quite ill. Additionally, they have the potential to infect dogs with heartworm which can be fatal. As well as being a health risk, mosquitoes make it difficult for people to enjoy their outdoor spaces. They swarm in large numbers, and their bites leave people with itchy, red welts.

Why do I have a mosquito problem?

The answer to why mosquitoes are on your property in large numbers is most likely because there are areas of standing water for them to breed. Yards with or near ponds, marshes, drainage ditches, and heavily wooded areas are highly attractive to mosquitoes. Also, if you have containers that collect water such as buckets, flower pots, wheelbarrows, and wading pools, these areas on your property tend to have problems with mosquitoes.

Where will I find mosquitoes?

Mosquitoes are most active at dusk or dawn when the weather is a bit cooler. During the middle of the day, they escape the heat by hiding in tall grasses, under trees, and in other areas of dense vegetation. Mosquitoes are mainly outdoor pests, but will sometimes find their way inside through open windows and doors or torn screens while foraging for food. A lot of flowering vegetation around the exterior of your home or business will also draw mosquitoes, increasing the possibility they’ll find their way inside.
