A Practical Guide To Ant Control For Your Memphis Property

6/15/2020

The average Memphis resident probably isn’t too concerned about ant control. The small frame of these bugs leads people to believe that they aren’t much of a threat and that they’re easy to kill. The truth is exactly the opposite. Ants can do more than just annoy and frustrate you. They crawl around with bacteria on their bodies and can spread diseases. A few species can bite you and cause a reaction. Other classes destroy property. And many are quite tough to eliminate.

It’s necessary to learn how to identify and prevent ants, especially those that frequent the Memphis area. Gaining knowledge about these critters can keep you and your loved ones out of the hospital. It could also keep your employees and customers well, and your business open. Read on and get further information on how Dart Pest, Lawn & Wildlife can help you in being ant-free.

What Ants Are Common In Memphis?

Among the different ant types in the city are carpenter, pharaoh, and odorous house ants. Carpenter ants range in size from ¼ to ½ of an inch long. Colorwise, they can be red, reddish-black, orange, yellow, brown, or tan. However, the majority are black. Some have wings. They’re wood-diggers, so they can create structural damage. Outdoors, they inhabit trees and logs. They eat meat, sugar, and other insects. Infestation indicators include spotting wood shavings near their nest holes, hearing rustling noises behind foundations, and having hollow walls.

Pharaoh ants are around ⅛ of an inch long. Their yellow and brown bodies have red and black stomach marks. They’re drawn to dark and damp areas. Typical nesting places for them are yards, baseboards, foundations, pipes, insulation, and cloth. Sweets, fats, proteins, grease, and fellow bugs are what they feed on. Pharaoh ants are known for transmitting pathogens like salmonella. Be on the lookout for their amber-colored workers; this is a main sign of infestation.

Odorous house ants are slightly larger than ⅛ of an inch. Their uneven bodies are brown or black. Warmth and moisture are what pull them indoors; they’ll live in heaters, carpeting, wall and floor voids, paneling, and pipes. Dairy, juice, vegetables, meat, and sugar drive them wild. Should they bite you, it’ll only hurt a little bit. If you crush them, they’ll smell like rotting coconut.

What Can You Do To Prevent Ants?

There are several ways to make your home or business less attractive to ants. Prime methods will consist of habitual landscaping, simple cleaning routines, and tending to interior issues. It won’t necessitate a whole lot of effort and the rewards will be plentiful. Follow these preventive steps:

  • Fix holes in walls, screens, windows, roofs, and utility lines. Many ants are very tiny, so they can get through any crack or crevice.
  • Add sweeps to all exterior doors.
  • Greenery should be groomed and kept several feet from your front door.
  • Food and garbage should be in air-tight containers.
  • Clean up food messes immediately.
  • Regularly clean your kitchen and pantry, vacuum, and take out the trash.
  • Fix leaks and moisture problems.
